I’d stare at the content, trying to decipher its meaning, but it felt like trying to read encrypted code.
The Struggle for Understanding:
Months went by, and the confusion persisted. Concepts like “prosecution,” “disclosure,” and “embodiment” eluded me. I couldn’t differentiate between a “continuation” and a “continuing application” or an ADS and an IDS. When I heard terms like “patent prosecution highway,” I felt like I was hearing about a distant land I’d never visited.
The Humbling Experience:
Taking practice tests was a humbling experience. Scoring 20% was a first for me, and it shook my confidence. I found myself in WhatsApp chatrooms, hesitant to ask questions, fearing I’d expose my lack of understanding. I wished I could plead, “Start from square one. Explain it to me like I’m five.”
The Turning Point:
Despite the course videos and resources, clarity remained elusive. But I wasn’t ready to give up. I decided to dive deeper, dissecting each concept, seeking external resources, and asking countless questions. The real breakthrough came when I decided to tackle Chapter 2100 of the MPEP head-on. With determination, I sat down and read it from the beginning, discussing every single sentence with my spouse, another Ph.D. scientist. Together, we dissected the dense text, trying to decipher its meaning, often asking each other, “What the ….. does this mean?” As my spouse read out sections, I meticulously took notes, ensuring we captured the essence of each concept.
